Thanks Barry for all of your help!

Good news is I have worked through all of the instructions and now get a login prompt but cannot login.

I will keep trying but am making a backup of the machine before I do anything else! :)

Thanks!

Kind Regards,

I've never seen this before :-(

A solution seems to be indicated in:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/charset-configuration.html

But, again, I've never encountered this. IXP Manager is running just fine on a system as follows:

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=14.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=trusty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS"

 $ dpkg -l | grep mysql-server
ii  mysql-server                        5.5.52-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
                  all          MySQL database server (metapackage
depending on the latest version)
ii  mysql-server-5.5                    5.5.52-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
                  amd64 MySQL database server binaries and system
database setup
ii  mysql-server-core-5.5               5.5.52-0ubuntu0.14.04.1
                  amd64        MySQL database server binaries
